Wartsila Voyage has entered into a strategic partnership with tech giant Microsoft to deliver industrialized Internet of Things (IoT) for shipping via a scalable cyber-secure platform.

The company aims to achieve this goal by integrating with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge.

Within the framework of this partnership, Wartsila Voyage will work on the installation of a “streamlined” Intelligent Edge technology.

This capability is expected to help meet industry decarbonization goals, as well as support the widespread application of stand-alone technology.

Wartsila Voyage President and Wartsila Executive Vice President Sean Fernback said: “The maritime world is entering the digital age, where pooling our investments in common platforms and standards is a prerequisite for successful innovations for a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry.

“The common Wartsila platform will serve as a catalyst to deploy future autonomy and emission reduction technologies. We want to focus our efforts on areas with common standards that allow ships to access innovative solutions more easily. “

Wartsila Voyage will be involved in the development of industrial teleoperation, enforcement and cybersecurity capabilities with active surveillance.

The Wartsila platform, thanks to its remote operation capabilities, will provide rapid access to the latest on-board solutions.

It will offer remote updates, upgrades, asset commissioning and diagnostics to improve vessel availability, deployment and maintenance.

For enhanced monitoring, security updates and asset management services, many Microsoft and IoT security solutions will be integrated into the Wartsila platform.

Through this project, Wartsila Voyage aims to establish an open development environment with standardized data formats, application programming interfaces (APIs), integrated systems and multi-layered cybersecurity.

In addition, the partnership will allow the development of autonomous capacities.

Recently, Wartsila deployed a new OPTI-DP engagement tool developed using applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling.
