At around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, passengers on the Carnival Miracle cruise ship were awakened by an alert that someone had fallen overboard.

The passengers were in the middle of a three-day trip from the Long Beach cruise terminal to Ensenada.

“Someone has lost their life, whether by accident or by criminal act, I don’t know,” said Daniel Miranda, a paramedic firefighter on the ship, according to CBS Los Angeles.

“There is a strong suspicion of foul play. “

The outlet says many passengers are also concerned that the incident was due to a criminal act, after the woman fell from the balcony on the fifth floor of her cabin.

There are 12 decks on the Carnival Miracle cruise ship.

“A lot of people are worried because this is someone’s life, and there is a good chance that person will not be found alive,” Miranda added.

After more than 31 hours of searching, the coast guard halted their efforts on Sunday.

“They did their best to get the crews out on small boats and rescue and start a search,” Miranda said.

Following the incident on Saturday morning, Carnival released a statement.

“We informed Carnival Miracle guests this morning of an overboard incident involving one of our guests from their cabin balcony,” they wrote.

“Our hearts are with the guest and their family, and our care team is supportive.”

With a capacity of 2,100 people, Miranda estimated that approximately 1,100 people were on board the cruise ship at the time of the incident.

The United States Coast Guard was assisted in their search by the Mexican Navy.
