Maersk partners with CCS to support decarbonization

Danish container shipping company AP Moller-Maersk and the China Classification Society (CCS) have entered into three different cooperative framework agreements to facilitate decarbonization efforts.

Initially, the three agreements will be valid for two years.

Partners will focus on science and technology innovation projects, carbon neutral ship designs, and the availability and lifecycle infrastructure for green fuels.

In order to create a common force for the project, they will also extend the agreements to other research institutes.

Maersk China Managing Director Jens Eskelund said, “Maersk has set itself a clear and ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. China, as a leading maritime and shipbuilding nation in world, will be a crucial partner in ensuring that our industry is able to respond. effectively to the challenge of climate change.

“We are very pleased to partner with CCS to collaborate on carbon neutral technologies and standards and explore opportunities for international cooperation in the area of ​​sustainable and zero carbon shipping. ”

To decarbonize its maritime operations, the company announced last month that it intends to introduce the first of a series of eight large ocean-going container ships that will run on carbon-neutral methanol in the first quarter of 2024.

With an average capacity of approximately 16,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), these vessels will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The agreement with HHI included the option for four additional vessels in 2025.

Earlier this month, the American Bureau of Shipping announced that these eight large container ships will be built in its class.

CCS Chairman and Chairman Mo Jianhui said, “Maersk is already a pioneer in energy efficiency and decarbonization. By partnering with Maersk, I believe we can develop the right set of standards, rules and technical solutions for the benefit of the entire industry.
