Travel writer Jo Kessel filmed the glare aboard the Regal Princess, putting the ship’s “luxury” bedding, the mini-suite tub, and the dizzying 16-deck glass gangway to the test. Its images present the scoop on the ship’s entertainment and the best places to drink and dine on board.

VIP treatment is expected on a cruise ship named “Princess” – and I certainly got it on the Regal Princess.

A video I shot of my mini cruise from Southampton to Rotterdam aboard the 3,500 passenger ship begins by exploring the exterior features, from the multiple pools and hot tubs to an outdoor gym.

There are countless ways to burn calories outdoors, including golf, although my swing wouldn’t have impressed Tiger Woods.

Moving on, I put some unique equipment to the test.

First of all: the beds. The key to sleep on vacation and the American cruise line Princess has hired sleep experts to design the bespoke “luxury beds” – available for purchase in the United States if you fancy spending $ 1,700 (1 £ 250) on a mattress and $ 100 (£ 75) per pillow!

“My swing wouldn’t have impressed Tiger Woods,” said Jo, after his time on the green.

What did this traveling writer do with his? The mattress was nice, so were the pillows and linens. Watch the verdict.

Mine is normally a balcony cabin, but this trip saw me upgrade to a mini-suite.

The images highlight the advantages of this accommodation, which includes additional space and two different types of bubbles.

“The bathroom of a mini-suite has a full-size tub – a rarity on a cruise ship,” Jo writes.

Cue plenty of lounging in a tub filled with frothy foam.

No more room keys that look like credit cards.

ROYAL PRINCESS IN FIGURES

Regal Princess, built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, debuted in 2014. It is 217 feet (66 m) high, 1,083 feet (330 m) long and weighs 142,229 gross tons.

Guests can explore 19 decks and the ship has over 1,400 balconies. The ship can accommodate 3,560 guests and there are 1,346 international crew on board.

Instead, Regal Princess pioneered the ‘Medalion’ – a contactless technology now deployed fleet-wide.

This is a 10p size disc worn as a pendant on a necklace or bracelet and performs multiple functions (all shown in the movie) such as opening cabin doors, paying for purchases, and clocking in and out. the exterior of the ship.

It’s the perfect, hands-free accessory in the event of a pandemic.

Then a few other exclusive Princess offers.

The stage sandwiched between the upper deck pools transforms into a fountain that features nightly light and sound shows.

Then there is the “Sea Walk” – a 16-deck high glass walkway that cantilevered over the edge of the ship.

Walking along its entire length (seeing the sea under your feet) is breathtaking.

Fear drives many passengers back after a few steps.

Jo says food is of a high standard throughout the Regal Princess

Do not worry. The movie shows there’s plenty of conventional entertainment as well, from live music venues to a theater that features West End-style musicals to the spa.

Finally, we see Regal’s kitchen.

While the food is of a high standard throughout the ship, my favorites are the mushroom risotto from the Italian specialty restaurant Sabatini and the filet mignon from the Crown Grill steakhouse.

Did Regal Princess live up to its name? In fact, yes! I felt like a king from start to finish.
