Carnival cruise ship denied stopover in Bonaire

Bonaire’s local authorities denied Carnival Liberty to make its scheduled stopover in Bonaire on December 22 due to COVID cases among the crew. It comes when cruise destinations worry that cruise ships are bringing the new Omicron variant, and cruise lines are increasing protocols to keep guests and crew safe.

Bonaire denies the freedom of carnival

With concern over the new Omicron variant, cruise ports are starting to refuse cruise ships, including the Carnival Liberty in Kralendijk, Bonaire. According to a local report, Port Captain Gunter Flanegin confirmed that in consultation with public health, it was decided not to allow passengers from the Carnival cruise ship to Bonaire, forcing the ship to stand aside and not to dock.

Even though cruise lines do not release any COVID figures, 2.5% of crew members are known to have tested positive on board Carnival Liberty. When the ship called in Willemstad, Curaçao, the day before December 21, authorities in Bonaire were also notified of the positive cases.

Carnival Liberty is currently on an eight-day trip to the Southern Caribbean from Miami, Florida on December 18, 2021. There are four days at sea during the cruise, as well as three ports of call.

The stopover in Curaçao took place but had a slightly delayed departure. With the call to Bonaire canceled, there are now questions as to whether the scheduled visit to Aruba tomorrow (December 23) will take place.

CDC lifts warning for Bonaire

It comes just like Bonaire has been raised to level 4 by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That means the CDC now advises avoiding all travel to the Caribbean cruise destination, but if travel is a must, travelers should make sure they are fully vaccinated.

The island has also tightened its travel restrictions, including the travel bubble between the Dutch Caribbean islands of St. Maarten, Curaçao and Bonaire. The Travel Gateway has now been closed due to growing concerns about the Omicron variant.

It is also because the government is increasing general travel requirements. From December 22, 2021, travelers aged 12 and over entering Bonaire will be required to show proof of a negative PCR test performed within 48 hours of departure to the island. There is also a self-test requirement that travelers must pass on the same day they arrive after entering the Caribbean country.

Carnival Liberty put back into service from PortMiami, Florida on October 9, 2021. The ship is scheduled to terminate the current traveler in Miami on December 26, Boxing Day.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more facts become known.
